Attracted to the Flame

University of Bridgeport

Schelfhaudt Gallery

November-December 2026

For many art is an all consuming compulsion; to experience art, make art and design a life where art is a focus, demanding sacrifice and often engendering a bohemian lifestyle that is understood by fellow creatives and questioned by many others. The artists’ compulsion can be described as an ‘impractical practicality’. It is how creative empaths function, process and cope in a world full of conflict and unanswerable questions, like man’s inhumanity to man, and the big Why or How? Regardless of their views on these existential queries, artists are attracted to the flame of creativity, risking the conditions of the artists’ practice and lifestyle. The artistic pursuit, like a flame has the potential to create, forge, and destroy.
